Types of level crossings

There were 18,459 level crossings on the railway network at the end of 2009, of which :

  • 12,707 were public level crossings with automatic or manual barriers ;
  • 3,804 public level crossings without barriers, namely with a Cross Sign (with or without a Stop sign);
  • 840 public level crossings for pedestrians ;
  • 1,108 PN privés.

About 2,600 are on lines without railway traffic. There remain about 15,100 active, public level crossings.

Breakdown of level crossings by type of road

  • Less than 1% of all level crossings are located on national, A roads
  • 30% on departmental, B roads
  • 70% on local roads

Accidents at level crossings

The number of accidents at level crossings, collisions between a road user (vehicle, pedestrian or cycle) and a train have been going down for over 20 years. The drop became sharper in 2004, especially following the implementation of automatic radar control by the government.
