Primary target of RFF
(French Railway Network)
The primary target of RFF is to reduce the number of accidents at level crossings.
To do so the RFF, government departments, local authorities and the SNCF (French Railways) are taking six actions in parallel, with national coordination provided by the Level Crossings Commission, chaired by Claude Liebermann:
- Remove problematic level crossings (19% of accidents at just 1% of level crossings), by building a two-tier passage.
- Improving safety at level crossings where many incidents have occurred, according to the diagnostic carried out jointly by the road and railway management bodies, mainly by seeking to change road users’ behaviour (e.g. Preventing zigzag crossing by adding a central island to separate the directions, reducing the approach speed, improving level crossing visibility by adding diode lights on posts etc).
- The Level Crossings Commission to carry out surveys and experiments to discover new solutions for improving safety.
- Teach prevention to both the general public and road professionals, to remind people of the rules.
- Monitor offences with automatic equipment (radar at the level crossings).
- Avoid making additional level crossings.
