At level crossings strict compliance with the Highway Code and the road signs is vital, whether you are on foot, with a car, lorry or two-wheeler.
Crossing a railway line at a level crossing need not be dangerous if you are careful.
Slow down when approaching a level crossing: |

For level crossings with barriers : |

When the red light flashes, even if the barrier is not down yet, you must stop (a train can pass within 25 seconds of the start of the signal, and it cannot stop). |
For Level Crossings with a Cross Sign and Stop : |

Come to a full stop at the Stop Sign. Check that the track is clear and that there is no train on either side (trains travel on the left on a two-track line). |
For Level Crossings with a Cross Sign without a Stop : |

Slow down at the traffic sign and level crossing, and only cross the lines if the tracks are empty in both directions. |
Only enter a level crossing : |

If the driver is able to cross over without risk of getting stuck and stopping in the middle. |
Once the vehicle is crossing : |

If the barrier starts closing, do not hesitate to break it with the vehicle. It is designed for that. |

In the event of a problem : |

Do not hesitate to use the telephone located on one side or another of the automatic crossing; get out of the car if it is stuck on the level crossing and dial 18 for crossings without barriers. |
